The Honda Activa e: is one of two electric scooters with which Honda has entered the EV segment in India. We sampled the top RoadSync Duo variant which gets the large 7-inch TFT display with Bluetooth connectivity but aside from that is mechanically identical to the standard variant.
Honda Activa e design and features
Unlike the dated-looking petrol Activa, the new Activa e: cuts a very fresh silhouette. And that’s no surprise since the Activa e: is actually a restyled CUV e: (a scooter sold in Europe). While this is a modern design, it still has the measured approach that you’d find on a family scooter.
The scooter we rode was the top RoadSync Duo variant, which gets a large 7-inch TFT display with a very straightforward UI. As is the case with most modern vehicles, you can pair your smartphone to this dash via Honda’s app and get notification alerts as well as navigation prompts.
Honda Activa e battery swapping cost
The Activa e:’s batteries can be swapped at a Honda battery-swapping station only and to use that service there are a couple of subscription options. The Rs 1,999/month plan gives you 35kWh of energy, while the Rs 3,499/month plan gives you 87kWh of energy. Honda claims you can do 40km a day with the former and 100km a day with the latter.
While this shields you from battery degradation and replacement down the road, these prices put the Activa e:’s running costs about on par with a comparable 125cc petrol scooter. And since the batteries are located under the seat, there’s next to no storage space under the seat. So two of the big USPs of an electric scooter are missing here.
Honda Activa e ride and handling, motor and performance
The Honda Activa e:’s riding experience is very unlike its namesake and this is a spirited, zippy thing that can very easily touch its indicated 90kph top speed in its Standard and Sport modes. It has a surprisingly firm suspension setup but it never feels stiff or harsh. And thanks to the 12-inch wheels at both ends, handling is also surefooted.
Honda Activa e price and verdict
Since the Honda Activa e: has no boot space and you can’t charge it at home, while having running costs akin to a 125cc petrol scooter, some of the biggest USPs of an EV are missing here. Then there is also the fact that the Activa e:’s pricing is on the higher side even in the context of EVs.
Make no mistake, the Activa e: is a very pleasant and comfortable thing to ride. However, it has some issues that are difficult to look past. Part of the problem is that the Activa e: is ahead of its time. Perhaps if it was launched a few years later, when Honda’s battery-swapping stations were commonplace, then recommending one would have been easier. But, as it stands today, you really need to want the Activa e: and be located close to a Honda swapping station for it to be a viable option.
